Research the Collection

The BCMA permanent collection holds over 25,000 objects, including paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, sculpture, and decorative arts. We welcome faculty, students, and external researchers to make use of this valuable resource.

Curatorial staff can help facilitate your research into the collection by providing:

  • Digital Access

  • Object Study Visits

  • Curatorial Object Files

Digital Access

You can search the entire collection online . If you are unable to find what you need or would like assistance, please contact BCMALearning@bowdoin.edu.

If you would like to request high-resolution images of works in the BCMA’s collections, please visit our Rights and Reproductions website or contact Assistant Registrar Theresa Choi at t.choi@bowdoin.edu.

Object Study Visits

The Museum is able to facilitate in-person viewings of materials from collections storage, depending on the availability of curatorial staff. These object study visits are held in the Zuckert Seminar Room. Requests must be made at least two weeks in advance of the anticipated visit.

To learn more about our holdings or to inquire about viewing particular artworks, please contact BCMALearning@bowdoin.edu.

Curatorial Object Files

Students and faculty may request access to the curatorial object files for research. Please reach out to BCMALearning@bowdoin.edu  for more information or to schedule an appointment.

We encourage scholars to share their research with the Museum for our records.
